Özel explains why CHP municipalities have tax and social security debts: 'Because they lack a parliamentary majority'

CHP Chairman Özel made statements following the meeting, which was held behind closed doors. 

Regarding the social security and tax debts of CHP municipalities, Özel stated, “Because most CHP municipalities lack a parliamentary majority, they could not even take out bank loans to provide services; therefore, they chose to prioritize urgent services by deferring tax and social security payments. 

Tayyip Bey knows this better than I do. We all know that the most indebted municipalities are those held by the AK Party, and that the debt stock of the metropolitan municipalities now held by the CHP also stems from the AK Party era. The municipalities' debts accumulated especially during the AK Party period. In other words, the AK Party ate the meal, and now they want to collect the bill, along with the interest, from the CHP once again,” he said.

Addressing the mayors, Özel said, “We must continue with the utmost attention, just as we have until now. Because you are the mayors of the Turkey alliance. You received votes from voters of every view. You provide services to everyone without discrimination.

But the government is trying to attack this hall with trustees. It is trying to attack by cutting off municipal revenues. It is trying to attack by placing liens on their assets, through conspiracies and slander. Since they have launched a total attack, the response of the nation's representatives must also be collective, and it will be collective.

As is the case today, a collective struggle will be waged against this. The important thing is not to be discouraged by these slanders, not to pay attention to the slanders they make, and to stand tall against them with great resistance, to give confidence to friends and anxiety to those who are not. That is why we gathered here today,” he said.
