Özgür Çelik reacts to AKP's Gökkuş: 'We have never seen such shamelessness': Is selling something a point of pride?

The AKP's plan to privatize bridges and highways was discussed yesterday at the February meeting of the IMM Assembly. CHP Group Deputy Chair Ülkü İnanlı expressed her reaction to the privatization plan, and IMM AKP Group Deputy Chair Faruk Gökkuş responded to İnanlı.

Gökkuş stated, "Yes, we will privatize the bridges. Whatever economic system we believe in, we will continue to implement it despite you."

CHP Istanbul Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik reacted to Gökkuş's widely discussed remarks. Emphasizing that Gökkuş's statements are unacceptable, Çelik stated that they will continue to fight against the sale of public assets.

In a statement on his social media account, Çelik used the following expressions:

"Throughout our history, we have never seen such shamelessness. Is it a point of pride to sell bridges that were built with the public's taxes and are profitable? They are proud of it. They are now openly stating that their primary duty is to act as business agents for global capital in Turkey. We are also stating it clearly: We derive our legitimacy from the people, not from global powers. We will stand against those who try to sell our state's property and our people's rights for a pittance.

We will not allow them to jeopardize our sovereignty over the straits, for which we have given martyrs and sacrificed lives. The economic system they rely on, neo-liberal fascism, has been defeated all over the world. It will also be defeated in Turkey. Those who attempt to market our national assets to foreigners and global corporations will lose. Our people will win, our Turkey will win."
