Özgür Demirtaş criticizes income-based billing: 'Double injustice'

Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Alparslan Bayraktar touched upon the importance of correctly defining support groups in his statement regarding income-based natural gas and electricity billing. 

Minister Bayraktar said, “A consumer who has reached a certain level will be evaluated as a high-income consumer. If there is a high number of electrical appliances in their home, this type of billing can be applied.”

REACTION FROM ÖZGÜR DEMİRTAŞ

Following these statements, Economist Prof. Dr. Özgür Demirtaş issued a harsh criticism of the government's income-based billing project. 

Demirtaş emphasized that the practice is “extremely wrong” and stated that it is inappropriate to implement such a system in Turkey without first ensuring tax justice.

Demirtaş remarked, “Are you going to let millions of people who do not pay their taxes use cheap electricity as well? This is a double injustice.”

Minister Bayraktar stated that the new billing system would be implemented based on 2024 consumption data. He had said that by correctly defining support groups, they aim to create a fair system for those in need.
