Özgür Özel and Numan Kurtulmuş clash at Eygi's funeral: 'Were you going to say something different from me?'
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel and Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş clashed at the funeral of Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi.
Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel attended the funeral ceremony at the Didim Central Mosque for 26-year-old Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi, who was killed by Israeli soldiers in the West Bank.
According to Serbestiyet, Özgür Özel, who wanted to give a speech at Eygi's funeral, clashed with Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş.
Özel told Kurtulmuş, "A few words are valuable, but only to those who know how to listen. On a day like this, you are still creating division, still creating political issues... A few words from us would have had value in many places. It is your discretion, but claiming to be neutral while getting involved in such matters and using religious officials for this, it was not pleasant. It was not right, it did not suit you at all. A few words from us would have had significant meaning. Using religious officials for these matters was not right."
'WERE YOU GOING TO SAY SOMETHING DIFFERENT FROM ME?'
Upon Kurtulmuş's remark, "If you had spoken, were you going to say something different from me?", Özel replied, "That is for me to decide."
When asked about what happened at the ceremony, Özel said, "We all came to Didim to attend the funeral of our sister Ayşenur. Our friends informed us that there might be speeches at the funeral. I learned that a podium had been set up for the Vice President and the Parliament Speaker to speak. Upon the objection of our party members, the podium was removed. I called the Parliament Speaker. He said, 'I have come all the way from Ankara, it would be appropriate for me to speak on behalf of all of you.'"
