Özgür Özel's remarks on July 15: 'Those who call it a theater...'

Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel spoke to Yavuz Donat, a columnist for the Sabah newspaper, which is known for its proximity to the government.

Regarding the FETÖ July 15 coup attempt, Özel stated, "They said, 'This is a theater.' I immediately opposed it. I said, 'My brother, it was a coup, plain and simple. Anyone who calls this a theater is either detached from reality or lacks intelligence.'"

Özel added, "There is no place for the word 'coup' in the book or dictionary of democracy. Nor can there be."

"IT WAS A COUP, PLAIN AND SIMPLE"

Özgür Özel's statements are as follows:

"A coup is an event that shelves democracy and sets the country back 20-30 years every time. It benefits no one. Besides, anyone in this country who hopes for a coup can never recover."

"They were saying, 'This is a theater.' Even... at a party meeting... The television was on too... They said, 'This is a theater.' I immediately opposed it. I said, 'My brother, it was a coup, plain and simple. Anyone who calls this a theater is either detached from reality or lacks intelligence.' And I continued... 'There is no greater evil that can be done to Turkey than calling this a theater.'"

"A DUAL POSITION DOES NOT SUIT THE PARTY THAT FOUNDED THE REPUBLIC"

"The Republic means democracy," said Özel, adding, "Democracy is the free will of the people. As the great Atatürk stated, there is no power above the national will. A dual position does not suit the Republican People's Party, which I chair, a party that founded the Republic."
