Özgür Özel reminds that those responsible for the İliç mining disaster have not been held accountable: 'Starting with Murat Kurum...'
Commemorating the workers who lost their lives on the anniversary of the mining disaster in the İliç district of Erzincan, Özel stated that those responsible have still not been held accountable. In his message, Özel underlined that Murat Kurum is among those responsible.
CHP Chairman Özgür Özel published a message on the anniversary of the mining disaster that occurred in the İliç district of Erzincan on February 13, 2024. Commemorating the 9 workers who lost their lives in the disaster, Özel pointed out that those responsible have not been held accountable. In his message, the CHP leader pointed to Environment Minister Murat Kurum as the primary person responsible for the disaster.
Nine workers lost their lives when a pile of soil stored after cyanide leaching at the Çöpler gold mine in İliç slid due to a landslide. Drawing attention to the inadequacy of worker safety and environmental inspections, Özel called for the necessary measures to be taken to prevent such disasters from recurring.
Reminding that 1 year has passed since the mining disaster, Özel made the following statements in his post on social media:
''I commemorate with mercy our 9 workers who lost their lives on the 1st anniversary of the Erzincan İliç massacre. Despite 1 year passing since the massacre, those responsible, primarily the main person responsible for the disaster, Environment Minister Murat Kurum, have not been held accountable.
The Research Commission established in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) could not even write its report. We will continue to maintain our struggle on political and legal levels until those responsible for all work-related murders, including Soma, Ermenek, and İliç, are held accountable.''
