Özgür Özel visits Mahir Polat at his home: 'There is no more tolerance left'

Mahir Polat, who was being held at the Marmara Prison in Silivri, was granted house arrest and released in the evening. CHP Chairman Özgür Özel visited Mahir Polat at his home following a rally he held in Şişli.

Republican People's Party Chairman Özel made the following statements after his visit:

“Today, we expect not just house arrest, but trial without detention for everyone currently in Silivri. We also want the trials to be broadcast live by television stations.

The accusation made against our friend whom I just visited is something inconceivable, such as 'sending 50 liras to one person and 100 liras to another, and those people having links to terrorism.' I mean, because someone didn't have cash on them, they said, 'Give me your number, I'll send it to you' a few years ago. They sent 50 liras to one person and 100 liras to another. These are inconceivable things.

Tomorrow, I will visit Mayor Ekrem, and I will visit our other mayors. We believe that Mr. Mahir will recover much faster with his own medication, his own doctor, and by his family's side.

“THERE IS NO MORE TOLERANCE LEFT FOR SLANDER AND FALSE WITNESSES”

We believe that all sick prisoners and convicts currently in prison should be released in the proper manner, that their treatment should be provided, and that they should be held under other measures. Together with Mr. Veli Ağbaba, we published a report and a book exactly 13 years ago titled 'Sick Prisoners'.

We see the fact that this problem has still not been solved since that day as problematic for the Turkish justice system as well. We want all our friends by our side and the ballot box in front of us. The nation is the arbiter. Everyone will see the innocence of those in files where there is not a single piece of evidence, despite the slander of so many lying witnesses and secret witnesses, and the arbitration of the nation must emerge as soon as possible.

Let the nation make the choice between the slanderers and the innocent. We want clean, honest, hardworking people to lead and elevate this country. Neither we nor the nation have any tolerance left for those who slander innocent people to stay in their seats, and for those who try to keep innocent people inside with lying witnesses and false testimonies.”
