Parliamentary commission must convene urgently

The effects of the Information and Communication Technologies Authority's (BTK) decision to impose an access ban on the popular social media application Instagram as of Friday morning continue to be felt in both society and politics.

Making a call to Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş regarding the issue via the social media platform X, CHP Group Deputy Chairman Murat Emir stated that the Parliamentary Digital Platforms Commission must convene urgently.

Emir's post is as follows:

"The Parliamentary Digital Platforms Commission must convene urgently to discuss the closure of the Instagram platform. Our fellow commission members have begun working in communication with other parties. Commission Chairman Mr. Hüseyin Yayman and Parliament Speaker Mr. Numan Kurtulmuş must also take on their responsibilities, and our Parliament must be ensured to intervene as soon as possible on such an important issue."

ÖZEL HAD ALSO CALLED IT 'COMPLETE NONSENSE'

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel had reacted to the access ban on Instagram by saying, "That is an environment of freedom; every idea should be able to be shared freely and without restriction, provided it does not contain a crime. Meta, which restricts this, is also doing wrong, but to see this and retaliate against Instagram—countless people communicate there, trade there, place orders there. Countless young people in Turkey use Instagram, and you are imposing a restriction on this. It is complete nonsense, completely wrong. What kind of mindset makes this decision, and how? For example, where did you announce this decision after making it, and in which judicial authority will this decision be challenged? There are no regulations for these in place, and it is a completely unacceptable, censorship-minded mentality. Those who do this are truly archaic people."
