Pentagon leaves PKK/YPG question unanswered

Following the overthrow of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria, developments in the region are being closely monitored by the entire world.

The U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) announced that communication with Turkey regarding the latest situation in Syria is ongoing.

Pentagon Deputy Press Secretary Sabrina Singh stated during a press briefing that the U.S. has a "great relationship" with its counterparts in Turkey regarding developments in Syria.

Commenting on the situation in Syria, Singh said, "We know that the dynamics of the situation on the ground are constantly changing. Turkey is certainly facing threats coming from inside Syria and has the right to protect itself." She noted that the U.S. continues to communicate not only with Turkey but also with other parties regarding Syria, and called for a reduction in tensions and conflicts in the region.

EVADED PKK/YPG QUESTION

Singh, who claimed that the U.S. is in Syria solely to fight against ISIS and stated that contact continues with the PKK/YPG terrorist organization groups that use the name SDF in Syria, evaded questions regarding the potential stance of the U.S. should conflicts between Turkey and these terrorist organizations escalate.

Singh stated that the regime change in Syria presents "a great opportunity and at the same time a great risk," and argued that there has been no change in the U.S. position in the region other than protecting its troops and fighting against DAESH.

SULEYMAN SHAH TOMB

Responding to a question about whether there are discussions with the U.S. regarding moving the Suleyman Shah Tomb back to its former location, Singh said, "Let me reiterate, we will continue to maintain our engagement with Turkey. Our Secretary of State is also traveling to discuss the general situation in the region, and of course, we understand the threats Turkey is facing; I will not say anything more beyond that."

The Suleyman Shah Tomb was moved to a point closer to the Turkish border in 2015 due to conflicts. While debates continue regarding the return of the tomb to its former location, the U.S. has no official statement on the matter.
