Poisoning incident on tanker ship: 1 dead
One person has died in a poisoning incident that occurred on the Panama-flagged tanker ship 'Swanlake' off the coast of Democracy and Freedoms Island. Two crew members have been hospitalized. Evacuation efforts are underway for the remaining 10 crew members on board.
In a statement issued by the Istanbul Governor's Office, it was stated, "On Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at approximately 17:30, a report was received that a poisoning incident had occurred on the Panama-flagged tanker named Swanlake, located 2 miles south of Democracy and Freedoms Island.
Upon the report, Coast Guard, Marine Police, UMKE, and AFAD CBRN teams were dispatched to the scene.
According to initial findings, in the incident, which is believed to have been caused by a leak in the tanker's cold tank, 1 crew member lost their life, and 2 crew members were poisoned and placed under observation.
Evacuation efforts for the other 10 crew members and the two injured individuals on the ship, which has a total of 13 Russian national crew members, are ongoing," the statement read.
