Police announce: 140 people detained in trustee protests

Following the appointment of a trustee to the Esenyurt Municipality, the Ministry of Interior announced that trustees have also been appointed to the Mardin Metropolitan Municipality, Batman Municipality, and Şanlıurfa Halfeti Municipality. 

As reactions against the trustee appointments continue to grow, the protests have spread to 8 provinces. The General Directorate of Security (EGM) issued a statement regarding the interventions made during the protests. According to the statement from the EGM, 140 people were detained during the protests. Legal proceedings have also been initiated against 75 social media users. 

The written statement issued by the General Directorate of Security (EGM) included the following remarks: 

"A total of 140 suspects who threw stones at security forces, engaged in physical assaults, and injured 16 of our security personnel and 2 of our citizens in 8 of our provinces—namely Mardin, Batman, Şanlıurfa, Istanbul, Van, Diyarbakır, Adana, and Antalya—have been apprehended and judicial proceedings have been initiated against them.

Furthermore, judicial proceedings have been initiated against 75 account users identified as having made provocative posts on social media platforms. Let us not fall for provocations. Let us not commit crimes by resorting to unlawful means, harming people, the environment, and property. Our state is strong. Those who plot these conspiracies against our state and our nation will receive the response they deserve."
