Police Chief Selim Arıcı clears roads for student protest: Issues 'do not intervene' order
Students across Turkey held protests following the death of Zeren Ertaş in an elevator accident at a KYK dormitory in Aydın. While footage emerged showing clashes between students and police, Çanakkale Police Chief Selim Arıcı gave instructions not to intervene in the students' protest.
In Aydın, an elevator malfunctioned and fell at the KYK Güzelhisar Girls' Dormitory, resulting in the death of Zeren Ertaş. Students gathered in front of the dormitory chanting "Murderer KYK."
Following Ertaş's death, students rose up in many parts of Turkey. Students participating in protest demonstrations occasionally faced off with security forces.
Footage showing security forces threatening students protesting the KYK administration by saying, "I will spray pepper gas, I will intervene," caused backlash on social media.

The footage from Çanakkale, however, was different from the others. Çanakkale Provincial Police Chief Selim Arıcı gave instructions not to intervene with the students protesting in Çanakkale. He ensured that students, who feared being blacklisted, could enter their dormitories without signing in, and had all students dropped off at their dorms by riot police buses.
