Police chief serving in counter-terrorism unit found dead in his car! Investigation launched
An investigation has been launched following the discovery of 34-year-old police chief Birson Ergene, who was stationed in Ankara, dead in his vehicle. IYI Party Balıkesir MP Turhan Çömez drew attention to the recent rise in police suicides and reiterated his call for the issue to be investigated.
Birson Ergene, a 34-year-old police chief serving at the Ankara Counter-Terrorism (TEM) Department, was found dead inside his vehicle on a vacant lot. Following the incident, an investigation was launched by the General Directorate of Security (EGM), and an inspector has been assigned to the case.
HE WAS LAID TO REST IN BURDUR
Ergene's funeral was held yesterday at 14:00 following a funeral prayer at the Burdur Sultandere Cemetery. It was learned that Ergene, who had previously served at the Bingöl TEM Branch Directorate, was the son of a police officer.
POLICE SUICIDES UNDER DEBATE AGAIN
The incident has brought the issue of police suicides, which are reported to have increased recently, back to the agenda. Many social media users, highlighting the working conditions of police officers, called on the Ministry of Interior to make improvements.
IYI Party Balıkesir MP Turhan Çömez also made a statement regarding the matter, reminding that his party had called for an investigation into police suicides approximately 20 days ago, and stated the following:
"14 police suicides in the last 2.5 months!
Unfortunately, today a police chief serving in the TEM Department took his own life.
73 of our police officers took their own lives in 2024, and 93 in 2025. The number of police officers who have committed suicide in the last 9 years has reached 713.
20 days ago, as the IYI Party, we warned; 'This situation is extremely serious, let's establish a commission, investigate it, and take precautions,' we said.
They didn't even care, they raised their hands and said; 'no, there is no need.'"
