Police commissioner accused of sharing Sinan Ateş's address released

The trial of lawyer Serdar Öktem and former Ankara Murder Bureau Chief Mustafa Ensar Aykal, whose files were separated because they did not provide their phone passwords following the murder of former Idealist Hearths President Sinan Ateş, who was a victim of a political assassination in broad daylight in Ankara, has begun.

According to 12punto columnist Müyesser Yıldız, strict security measures were taken at the hearing. Half of the courtroom was reserved for police officers.

Yıldız reported the following from the courtroom:

'JOURNALISTS SEARCHED'

"The trial of lawyer Serdar Öktem and former Ankara Murder Bureau Chief Mustafa Ensar Aykal, whose files were separated because they did not provide their phone passwords in the case of the murder of former Idealist Hearths President Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sinan Ateş, who was slaughtered in the middle of Ankara, has begun under strict security measures.

Journalists without a "turquoise" press card were not allowed into the hearing at the Ankara Courthouse. Half of the courtroom was reserved for police officers. Even the rules to be followed during the hearing were announced by a police chief, citing the "instruction of the Presiding Judge."

Meanwhile, almost all journalists with a "turquoise" card were subjected to a body search before entering the courtroom.

While the defendant not in custody, Serdar Öktem, did not attend the hearing, the detained Mustafa Ensar Aykal was present in the hall.

Sinan Ateş's wife Ayşe Ateş, his mother Saniye Ateş, and his siblings also attended the hearing. The Presiding Judge stated that they had received a request for additional information rather than a response from the USA regarding the mobile phones, and that only requests for release, not defense statements, would be taken at this hearing."

''When the Presiding Judge said each time, "I will only take your requests," Ayşe Ateş was content with saying, "Make a decision in accordance with your conscience and the law," while Sinan Ateş's sister, Selma Ateş Kazancı, demanded that both defendants be tried while in custody.

Mother Saniye Ateş also wished for the defendants to feel the pain of losing a child.

''HEARING ADJOURNED TO JUNE 26''

Şeyma Şahin, one of the lawyers for the Ateş family, demanded that it be revealed whether Tolgahan Demirbaş was caught at Olcay Kılavuz's house, and for this, Oben Özay, Kerem Gölay Öner, and other police officers who were there should be heard.

Lawyer Şahin said, "Olcay Kılavuz is as involved in the murder as the defendants lying inside." Lawyer Şahin also demanded the arrest of Serdar Öktem.

The prosecutor submitted an opinion that Doğukan Çep, who is stated to be the instigator of the murder, should be heard as a witness, and that Mustafa Ensar Aykal's detention should continue.

The court decided to release Mustafa Ensar Aykal with a travel ban and to hear Doğukan Çep, who sent a petition to make a statement, as a witness.

The hearing was adjourned to June 26.''
