Police intervention against students in Ankara: Many detained

Protests initiated by students following the arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor and presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu continue. Most recently, police intervened in a demonstration organized by university students in Ankara to protest the arrest of politicians, and a large number of students were detained.

A group of university students in Ankara gathered on Konur Street with the call, "The youth are standing up, walking for their future."

Chanting slogans such as "Either all together or none of us" and "Rights, law, justice," the students wanted to march to the Ministry of Justice. The students were not permitted to march due to security concerns. Police teams intervened against the students who wanted to march while chanting slogans. Police detained several students.

STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE

The Ankara Governor's Office issued a written statement regarding the footage of the intervention that drew reactions on social media. The statement from the Governor's Office reported that a total of 30 people, 9 women and 21 men, were detained in connection with the incident, and the following was noted:

"It has been determined that images have appeared in some press and social media outlets claiming that 'male police officers were seen exposing part of a person's body while detaining a woman.' In the image analysis and investigations conducted regarding the matter, it was determined that the detained individual is a male named M.B., born in 1998, who covered his face with a red scarf during the protest and was wearing jeans, a leather jacket, and a t-shirt. However, it was understood from the footage that emerged due to the individual resisting the police during the detention process that he was wearing women's undergarments," the statement read.
