Police officer on duty at shooting range where attacker practiced suspended
The Kahramanmaraş Police Department announced that the police officer on duty at the department's shooting range, M.Y., was suspended on the same day as the attacker's father, Uğur Mersinli, following the discovery that the school attacker had practiced at the facility, and that an investigation has been launched.
In a statement issued by the Kahramanmaraş Police Department, the following was stated:
"On 15.04.2026, a heinous armed attack occurred at Ayser Çalık Middle School in our province, which has plunged our country into mourning.
Within the scope of the work carried out regarding the incident, upon the determination that the perpetrator of the incident, I.A.M., had practiced shooting at the Provincial Police Department's Open Shooting Range on 13.04.2026 together with his father, U.M., the police officer on duty at the range, M.Y., was suspended on the same day with the approval of the Governor's Office.

In this context, an investigation has been initiated by the Inspection Board of the General Directorate of Security regarding officials who have or may have responsibility. Respectfully announced to the public."
