The Istanbul Police Department has issued a statement regarding the assassination tip-off concerning İmamoğlu.

"Regarding the claims made on 06.05.2025 by a political party leader that a tip-off was received in January concerning an assassination plot against a mayor currently in prison;

The Istanbul Police Department has initiated a retrospective investigation into the claims in question.

The investigation determined that the tip-off was made in December 2024, and that teams from the Fatih District Police Department Security Bureau were assigned to handle the evaluation and processing of the tip-off.

In the work carried out by the Security Bureau, the informant was called and summoned to the municipal building. During the preliminary investigation, it was understood that the individual was Selçuk TENGİOĞLU, who had received a life sentence for intentional homicide in 2004 and was released on parole in 2020. In the interview conducted with the individual accompanied by private security personnel, he stated that he likes the mayor in question, that he receives aid from the municipality, that he thought the mayor could be harmed by nationalist circles who are uncomfortable with the mayor's close ties to the DEM Party, that such topics were discussed in the ward during his time in prison, that he made the tip-off entirely based on his own feelings, that it was not based on any concrete information, and that he did not wish to provide a written statement.

Furthermore, in the meeting held with municipal officials, they stated that they would not be filing any legal complaints and that their own personnel would conduct a meeting with the individual named Selçuk TENGİOĞLU.

The tip-off in question was evaluated in accordance with procedure; it was understood that the tip-off was not based on concrete evidence, was based solely on personal opinions, and that the situation in question related to the period 5 years ago when he was in prison. The relevant process was concluded entirely within the framework of legal regulations, limited to the content of the tip-off.
