Pope's statement on Palestine: We support a two-state solution

In his statement regarding the Israel-Palestine issue, Pope Leo XIV emphasized that the Vatican has long clearly supported a two-state solution.

However, the Pope stated that Israel does not currently accept this solution, expressing that it is the only solution that could end the conflict. The Pope noted that the Vatican is trying to take on a mediating role to find a solution that will ensure justice for both sides, and said that President Erdoğan also supports this effort.

ATTENTION DRAWN TO TURKEY'S ROLE

Pope Leo XIV drew attention to President Erdoğan's role, especially in regional issues, stating, "Turkey can play an important role in this regard."

The Pope stated that Erdoğan could contribute to dialogue with both the Israeli and Palestinian sides. Furthermore, noting that he has adopted a similar approach regarding the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, the Pope said, "President Erdoğan took on a major role in establishing dialogue between Ukraine and Russia."

 ERDOĞAN'S MEDIATOR ROLE

Pointing out that the war between Ukraine and Russia has also been going on for a long time, the Pope said that a few months ago, Turkey was an important helper in bringing the two sides together. However, stating that no concrete steps have been taken for a solution yet, the Pope emphasized that new proposals for peace are currently back on the agenda.

The Pope noted that President Erdoğan's relationships with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and US President Donald Trump are of great importance in encouraging dialogue and taking steps toward a ceasefire, expressing that these relationships could be effective in ending the conflict.
