Postponement in the trial of Nasuh Mahruki

Former AKUT President Nasuh Mahruki, who was first arrested and then released due to his remarks regarding the electronic voting statement made by Supreme Election Council (YSK) Chairman Ahmet Yener, has appeared before the judge. Mahruki and his lawyer were present at the first hearing of the case in which he is being tried.

The first hearing of the case in which Mahruki is being tried on the charge of “publicly disseminating misleading information” was held at the Istanbul 15th Criminal Court of First Instance.

The hearing was also attended by former Istanbul Bar Association President Filiz Saraç, Republican People's Party (CHP) Deputy Chairman Aylin Nazlıaka, and members of the Istanbul Bar Association Board of Directors.

Present at the hearing with his lawyer, Mahruki said in his defense, "The investigation prosecutor did not ask a single question. I asked the judge which post was misleading, and they did not answer. Then a detention order was issued."

Continuing his speech by stating that he made the post based on information available in the public domain, Mahruki said the following:

"Hundreds of people are waiting outside. Because everyone knows that an injustice is being done to me here. They released the man who stabbed a taxi driver. This is how the law is going in Turkey."

HEARING POSTPONED

The prosecutor requested that the deficiencies be remedied and that the file be sent to them for the preparation of the opinion on the merits.

Granting time to Mahruki and his lawyer for additional defense, the court adjourned the hearing to January 13.

WHAT DID MAHRUKİ SAY?

Nasuh Mahruki had expressed his reaction on social media to the statements made by YSK Chairman Ahmet Yener regarding electronic elections.

In his post, Mahruki had included the following statements:

"Great Turkish nation, you must be very careful and vigilant. The government and the YSK are setting up a scheme to steal the elections one last time. The Chamber of Computer Engineers must have the authority to conduct audits on your behalf in an early Presidential election. If they are not audited, they will steal our votes, replace them with fake ones, and win the election illegally again. This would be the end of the Republic of Turkey, and this end would be more terrifying than anything you could see even in your worst nightmares."
