Prepared in 1928 by Atatürk's order: That zoning plan is still in use
Kastamonu's Taşköprü district suffered a major fire in 1927, with 70 percent of the district damaged. Upon hearing the news of the fire, Atatürk sent architects and urban planners from Ankara to Taşköprü, who prepared a plan based on the 'Grid City System,' known as the European school of urban planning. And Taşköprü is still using that zoning plan created 96 years ago.
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, who visited the Taşköprü district on August 29, 1925, as part of his tour of Kastamonu, was deeply impressed by the region.
Upon learning that the district had been damaged in a major fire in 1927, Atatürk sent architects and urban planners from Ankara to Taşköprü.
In 1928, the architects sent by Atatürk drew up a district plan based on the 'Grid City System,' known as the European school of urban planning.
While the district grew according to this plan, the 96-year-old plan is now on display at the Taşköprü City History Museum.

The streets and avenues of the Taşköprü district, planned using the grid method, were filmed by drone both day and night.
Taşköprü Mayor Hüseyin Arslan said, "In 1925, Atatürk visited Taşköprü. He was welcomed here by a very enthusiastic crowd. He even visited the building that currently houses our City History Museum, where our plan is located, and rested there."

Stating that Atatürk received the news of the Taşköprü fire with sadness, Arslan said, "At that time, Gazi Mustafa Kemal Atatürk heard about this incident and sent his architects and urban planners to this district. This map is a map from that time."

Providing information about the plan, Arslan noted the following:
"This plan is a plan whose technical name is grid. All streets intersect at a certain point vertically. You can see the street from end to end, and they face each other. In this sense, it is an important plan in urban planning. This plan, which emerged after a disaster, is also a very important example of planned urbanization."
