President Bukele wins majority in El Salvador Congress
In El Salvador, President Bukele's New Ideas Party has won 54 out of 60 seats in Congress.
Following the conclusion of the presidential and general elections in El Salvador, President Nayib Bukele's party has secured a majority in the distribution of seats in Congress.
The Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) of El Salvador announced that Bukele's New Ideas Party won 54 of the 60 seats in Congress.
The two centrist parties that have governed the country for the last 20 years (FMLN and ARENA) each won two seats, while the Christian Democratic Party and VAMOS each secured one seat.
The New Ideas Party, founded by Bukele and led by his cousin Xavi Zablah Bukele, has achieved an absolute majority in Congress, granting it extensive powers such as approving the budget and international loans, declaring a state of emergency, and appointing the attorney general and members of the Supreme Court of Justice.
The TSE had previously announced that 70 percent of the votes cast in the February 4 presidential election had been counted, with incumbent President Bukele receiving nearly 83 percent of the vote.
