Primary election process in CHP: Presidential candidate criteria determined

Following CHP Chairman Özgür Özel's statement regarding a 'presidential candidate,' preparations for a primary election have begun within the party.

While the names of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and Ankara Metropolitan Municipality (ABB) Mayor Mansur Yavaş are being discussed as potential presidential candidates within the CHP, Mansur Yavaş has conveyed to Özgür Özel that he will not participate in the primary election process to determine the presidential candidate.

The CHP Party Assembly (PM) has authorized the Central Executive Board (MYK) to announce the date for the primary election. The decision was taken by majority vote.

The PM meeting, held at the party headquarters under the chairmanship of CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, lasted approximately 5 hours. During the meeting, the primary election practice, in which the CHP decided to determine its presidential candidate by asking approximately 1 million 600 thousand party members, was discussed.

In this context, while the directive prepared for the primary election was being read, issues regarding the compliance of the primary election with the law and the party charter were addressed. Among the candidacy criteria included in the directive, it was stated that the candidate must meet the requirements to be a presidential candidate in the last presidential election and must be a party member.

At the meeting, the directive was not put to a vote by the PM members, but the Central Executive Board (MYK) was granted the authority to revise the directive. It was learned that the primary election and the directive would also be on the agenda at the MYK meeting to be held today.

In the PM, the investigation initiated by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the 38th Ordinary Congress of the CHP was also discussed.

ÖZGÜR ÖZEL WILL ANNOUNCE THE DATE DETERMINED BY THE MYK

While it was learned that the draft directive was not voted on at the PM meeting, it was noted that the PM members authorized the MYK to determine the date of the primary election.

The MYK meeting, held under the chairmanship of CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, lasted 2 and a half hours.

According to information received from party sources regarding the MYK agenda, the Party Assembly (PM) meeting held today with an early election agenda was evaluated and the primary election was discussed. During the MYK meeting, the primary election calendar was approved and candidate criteria were determined.

It is stated that Özel will announce the primary election directive and date at the weekly group meeting to be held tomorrow.
