Prison sentence sought for Mehmet Emin Korkmaz over clothing comments about Mihalgazi Mayor Akgün: He had claimed 'My account was hacked'

Mihalgazi Mayor Zeynep Güneş Akgün visited the newly appointed Governor of Eskişehir, Erdinç Yılmaz. Photos of the visit were shared on social media. Mehmet Emin Korkmaz made posts on social media targeting Akgün regarding the traditional clothing she wore. The Eskişehir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation into Korkmaz on charges of 'inciting the public to hatred and hostility' and issued a detention order. Korkmaz, who was detained in Erzurum, was arrested by the Eskişehir Courthouse Criminal Judgeship of Peace, which he joined via the SEGBİS video conferencing system.

The Eskişehir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office completed its investigation into the detained defendant Mehmet Emin Korkmaz and filed a lawsuit with the Criminal Court of First Instance. In the indictment accepted by the court, a prison sentence of 3 months to 2 years was requested for Mehmet Emin Korkmaz for 'insulting a public official due to their duty' and 1 to 3 years for 'inciting the public to hatred, hostility, or degradation' for his posts targeting Mihalgazi Mayor Zeynep Güneş Akgün over her traditional clothing.

KORKMAZ'S 'MY ACCOUNT WAS HACKED' DEFENSE

Furthermore, the indictment noted that Mehmet Emin Korkmaz, who faces a total of up to 5 years in prison, claimed that his account had been hacked on the day the post was made and that it did not belong to him. However, an investigation by the Cyber Crimes Division of the Eskişehir Police Department determined that the post was made by Mehmet Emin Korkmaz using his own mobile phone browser.

On the other hand, it was noted that Mehmet Emin Korkmaz had previously received an 11-month and 20-day prison sentence from the Erzurum 3rd Criminal Court of First Instance for 'insulting the President,' and that the announcement of the verdict had been deferred.
