The court has reached a verdict in the "insulting the President" case filed against Gülsüm Elvan and Sami Elvan, the mother and father of Berkin Elvan, who was killed after being struck in the head by a tear gas canister during the 2013 Gezi events. The court sentenced Sami Elvan to 1 year and 2 months in prison, and Gülsüm Elvan to 11 months and 20 days in prison.
Journalist Fatoş Erdoğan reported that the court panel had changed in the "insulting the President" case against Berkin Elvan's mother, Gülsüm Elvan, and father, Sami Elvan, and that the prosecutor had requested their conviction. The court panel ruled that Gülsüm Elvan and Sami Elvan should be sentenced at the lower limit. Sami Elvan was sentenced to 1 year and 2 months in prison, and Gülsüm Elvan was sentenced to 11 months and 20 days in prison.
