Prof. Dr. Barış Doster: 'Those looking for racism in Europe should look in the mirror first'

Participating in the Taksim Meydanı program broadcast on tv100, 12punto.com.tr columnist Prof. Dr. Barış Doster evaluated the 'grey wolf' sign currently on the agenda.

Criticizing Europe for attributing a racist meaning to the gesture in question, Doster stated the following during the live broadcast:

"Those looking for racism and fascism in Europe should look in the mirror first. Germany applied to intervene in the case at The Hague on the side of Israel; we will note this in history.

We are talking about a Germany that is almost passing gag laws against artists and journalists who are Jewish but condemn Israel's barbarism and massacre.

The same Germany was deporting a Russian orchestra conductor from the country after the Russia-Ukraine war began.

The same Germany was telling departments of Russian language and literature, 'Do not teach Russian authors'; we are talking about such a country. Therefore, we are in no position to take lessons on human rights and democracy from this country.

Let's come to the 'Grey Wolf'; in historical, literary, cultural, and political terms, every nation has epics at its foundation and origins. For example, there is a double-headed eagle symbol in the founding of America.

We know the wolf from our epic of breaking the chains of captivity! Every nation has a mythology, and it would be strange if it didn't. Is there any country without an epic?

Let's come to its political dimension; for Gazi Mustafa Kemal Pasha, our great savior, one of the code names used in our national 'War of Independence' is 'Nuh' (Noah) and one is 'Bozkurt' (Grey Wolf). It is not just us saying this; the British spy Armstrong has a book called 'Grey Wolf', and it is a book full of lies and inaccuracies.

The Grey Wolf is important for the Turkish nation in historical, ideological, and symbolic terms.

-How does Europe attribute a racist meaning to it?

One should not use the word fascism so generously; fascism is the defense of big capital interests with weapons. When we look at Turkish capital, can you weigh the Turkish laborer on the same scale as the German capital's hunger for raw materials and cheap labor today?

Is the fascism of the German the same as the nationalism of the Turkish laborer defending their homeland? Theirs is fascism, while ours is the solidarity of oppressed nations.

How will they explain Nazım Hikmet referring to Atatürk as a Grey Wolf, as a blonde wolf, in his Kuvay-i Milliye epic...
