Prominent figures of the organized crime world attended the funeral of 'Kürt Mehmet'

The funeral of 62-year-old Mehmet Kaplankıran, known in Berlin as a "betting baron" with ties to organized crime, was held on January 23 at the Berlin Sehitlik Mosque in Neukölln. Approximately one thousand people attended the funeral. Following the ceremony, Kaplankıran was laid to rest at the Luisenkirchhof Cemetery.
POLICE TOOK EXTENSIVE SECURITY MEASURES
It is reported that individuals associated with organized crime were among those who attended the funeral. According to reports in the German press, specifically Bild, members of well-known crime families such as the El Zein, Remmo, and Chahrour clans were present at the mosque. The police took extensive security measures for the funeral. Berlin police spokesperson Florian Nath stated, "We were prepared for all scenarios, but no intervention was necessary; everything went smoothly."
Members of the Remmo family were also present at Mehmet Kaplankıran's funeral. It was reported that family member Isa Remmo gave a speech during the burial, while Firas Remmo shared a photo of the hearse on his Instagram account with the note, "May God have mercy on him." Additionally, it was noted that former Berlin State Parliament member Hakan Taş attended the funeral.
ALLEGATIONS OF WREATHS SENT BY A DOCTOR WITH A FAKE DIPLOMA
It was learned that many individuals linked to organized crime groups sent wreaths to the funeral. Videos circulating on social media showed that, in addition to names such as Sedat Peker, Emrah Cantürk, Murat Türk, and Kadir Hınç, figures close to the Daltonlar gang and the Sarallar group also sent wreaths.
Mehmet Kaplankıran was a figure known for operating 14 "Wettarena" betting shops in Berlin, as well as for his investments in restaurants and real estate. Kaplankıran was described as a "businessman" and had migrated to Berlin from Bingöl at the age of 17. He was married and a father of two.
HE HAD BEEN THE TARGET OF AN ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT A MONTH AGO
Kaplankıran was the target of an armed attack at his home in the Lichterfelde district in December 2022. Approximately 20 shots were fired in the attack carried out by unidentified individuals. It was alleged that the organized crime group Daltonlar had claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Daltonlar side denied these allegations. Kaplankıran had offered a reward of 500 thousand euros to find the perpetrators of the attack.
Journalist Osman Çaklı stated that Kaplankıran had been receiving treatment for cancer in Cuba and passed away due to this illness. Çaklı reported that the Daltonlar gang had made peace with Kaplankıran due to his cancer treatment and that Sedat Şahin and the Sarallar were also among those who sent wreaths to the funeral.
