Prosecutor's referral document regarding TÜSİAD executives revealed: 'Issues they did not know the content of'

The prosecutor's referral document has been obtained regarding the investigation launched into the statements made by Turkish Industry and Business Association (TÜSİAD) Board Chairman Orhan Turan and High Advisory Council (YİK) President Mehmet Ömer Arif Aras during the association's general assembly.

In the referral document sent by the prosecutor's office to the duty magistrate judge, it was stated that suspects Turan and Aras, in their speeches at the TÜSİAD General Assembly on February 13, made statements containing suggestions and guidance to the judiciary, as well as disinformation contrary to the truth, regarding events they only had information about through the press and whose content they did not know.

It was stated that the suspects, solely for the purpose of creating anxiety, fear, or panic among the public, disseminated information contrary to the truth regarding Turkey's internal and external security, public order, and general health in a manner capable of disturbing public peace, and thus committed the crime of "publicly disseminating misleading information."

The document stated that there is evidence and concrete facts constituting strong suspicion that the suspects committed the alleged crime, and requested the implementation of judicial control measures, including a travel ban, for Turan and Aras.

INVESTIGATION

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had determined that in his speech at the association's general assembly on February 13, TÜSİAD Board Chairman Turan used expressions containing suggestions and guidance to the judiciary regarding certain investigations and prosecutions.

Evaluating that Turan's statements were contrary to the truth and capable of disturbing public peace, the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had launched an ex officio investigation against him for the crimes of "attempting to influence a fair trial" and "publicly disseminating misleading information."

Instructions had been given to the Security Branch of the Istanbul Police Department for the statements of Turan and TÜSİAD YİK President Aras, who had an investigation launched against him for the same crimes in recent days, to be taken at the prosecutor's office.

Following this, Turan and Aras were taken to the Istanbul Courthouse to have their statements taken.
