Protest against the 'Maarif Model' from the Eğitim-İş union!

The Ministry of National Education's recently announced ''Century of Turkey Maarif Model'' continues to be a subject of debate. Most recently, the Eğitim-İş union held a protest against the Maarif Model.

Speaking on behalf of the group that gathered in front of the Ministry of National Education (MEB) while chanting slogans, Eğitim-İş President Kadem Özbay stated that they face incidents of violence in education every day and announced that they will hold a strike across 81 provinces on Friday. 

MOVING AWAY FROM SCIENTIFIC AND SECULAR EDUCATION 

Noting that they came together on the grounds that the draft of the Century of Turkey Maarif Model is contrary to secular and scientific education, Atatürk's reforms, and the Republic, Özbay said that they would deliver the signatures they collected for the withdrawal of the draft to the Ministry today. 

Özbay emphasized that the new curriculum draft carries the threat of shaping the education system from an ideological perspective, encouraging a rote-learning and dogmatic approach to education by moving away from scientific and secular education.

Assessing that curricula are the constitution of education, Özbay stated that such a change cannot be made without including the true stakeholders of education in the process, without conducting an evaluation of the past and a needs analysis, and without scientific findings and pilot implementation. 

THERE CAN BE NO CURRICULUM WITHOUT ATATÜRK

Union members, carrying signs and banners reading "A curriculum without Atatürk, the Republic, and citizenship is not the education curriculum of the Republic of Turkey, it cannot be, it is fake," dispersed after the speeches. 

Meanwhile, it was observed that the group members were wearing black "No to Violence" badges due to the murder of İbrahim Oktugan, a private high school principal in Istanbul.

Eğitim-İş Union President Kadem Özbay had met with CHP Chairman Özgür Özel before the protest.
