Protest at Boğaziçi University against cafeteria price hikes: Large number of police deployed

Students stated that the rising cafeteria fees are shifting the burden of the economic crisis at the university onto the students. Reminding that students who enrolled in the university in 2021 paid 4.10 TL for a meal, the students pointed out that prices have increased more than 20-fold over the five-year period.

Students expressed their reaction to the university administration, stating that their educational lives are being overshadowed by the cost of living and hikes in dormitory and cafeteria fees. Demanding that the price hikes be withdrawn, the students declared, "We will not bear the burden of the crisis; quality and accessible nutrition is a right."

THEY PROTESTED THE PRICE HIKE DECISION

Gathering in front of the cafeteria at the North Campus around noon today at the call of the Student Representative Council (ÖTK), students protested the price hike decision.

During the protest, students passed through the cafeteria turnstiles without paying. Afterward, they joined the cafeteria staff, put on hairnets, and served food to their fellow students at the service counter.

OUR STRUGGLE WILL CONTINUE

Making a statement after the protest, the students demanded that the cafeteria price hike be withdrawn immediately. Stating that the increase in housing and nutrition costs also threatens students' right to education, the students noted that their struggle will continue.
