WHAT HAPPENED?
Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is also the President of the Union of Municipalities of Turkey (TBB) and the CHP's presidential primary candidate, was detained on March 19 as part of an investigation into "terrorism" and "corruption" targeting the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality. He was arrested on the afternoon of March 23 at the Çağlayan Courthouse, where he had been brought on the evening of March 22. İmamoğlu was arrested and taken to Silivri Prison on charges of "rigging tenders, recording personal data, bribery, and establishing an organization" as part of the "corruption" investigation into the İBB.
İmamoğlu was released without judicial control measures regarding the "terrorism" investigation within the scope of the "urban consensus." The judge's decision stated that since it was decided to arrest İmamoğlu as part of the investigation into corruption allegations, there was no need for the arrest measure at this stage, despite the existence of strong suspicion of a crime.
