Puppies found discarded in a trash bag in Edirne

An incident near the Stray Animal Shelter, operated by the Edirne Municipality Veterinary Affairs Directorate, has horrified animal welfare advocates. After hearing puppy sounds coming from a trash dumpster, animal lovers discovered 4 puppies that had been placed inside a bag and abandoned. The puppies were rescued, taken to the shelter, and provided with food and water.

Following the spread of the incident on social media, Edirne Mayor Filiz Gencan Akın visited the shelter and met with representatives of animal welfare associations. The municipality announced that it had immediately terminated the employment contracts of the personnel identified as having thrown the dogs into the trash and that an investigation had been launched against them.

RESPONSIBLE PARTIES TAKEN INTO CUSTODY

Within the scope of the investigation conducted by the Edirne Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, two employees working at the shelter, identified as Ş.K. and E.A., were taken into custody. Mehmet Esvet Kütük, Vice President of the 22 Dost Ali Association, stated, “The breach of duty is clearly evident. It is understood that the Edirne Municipality's burial protocol was not followed. The irresponsible actions of the employees have saddened all animal lovers.”

MUNICIPALITY AND VOLUNTEERS TAKE ACTION

Following the scandal, Mayor Akın stated that shelter visits would be increased and inspections would be tightened. It was also announced that action has been taken to increase the number of volunteers and reorganize the staff.

Mehmet Esvet Kütük remarked, “This incident caused us to question whether such a situation might have occurred before. However, we were informed that this was an isolated incident. Nevertheless, we will be more vigilant.”
