İYİ Party's Turhan Çömez also addressed Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek, asking, “How did this escape your notice while this money was being taken away?”
“830 billion lira equals 188 trucks of cash”
In a post on his social media account, Çömez calculated the amount of money in the funds under liquidation based on banknotes and transport capacity.
According to Turhan Çömez’s calculation;
830 billion TL equals approximately 4 billion 150 million banknotes in 200 TL denominations.
When calculated at approximately 1.13 grams per banknote, the total weight reaches 4 thousand 690 tons.
When calculated based on trucks with a 25-ton carrying capacity, approximately 188 trucks are required.
Following this calculation, the İYİ Party's Çömez stated, “In other words, they loaded the money of 515 thousand of our citizens into 188 trucks and took it away, right in front of everyone!”
To Şimşek: “How did it escape your notice?”
Continuing his post, Çömez directly targeted Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek and posed the following question:
“How did it escape your notice while this money was being taken away, Mehmet Şimşek?”
The İYİ Party deputy also reminded the Minister of his statement about 10 months ago, where he said, “We are aware of the manipulations,” and demanded accountability.
SPK initiated liquidation process for 130 funds
Çömez’s statement came at a time when the decisions taken by the SPK following the sharp volatility in capital markets are on the agenda.
On September 17, the SPK halted the trading of funds listed on TEFAS established by Tera, Pusula, Hedef, Atlas, A1 Capital, Pardus, and Bulls Portföy, and decided that some funds would be liquidated using a method to be determined by the Board.
While the size of the funds under liquidation is at the level of approximately 830 billion lira, reports regarding the number of investors cite figures over 500 thousand. The SPK publishes daily and consolidated data regarding the portfolio value and number of investors in the funds.
Treasury and Finance Minister Mehmet Şimşek, on the other hand, stated that the developments stemmed from credit and liquidity problems that emerged in a limited number of funds, arguing that there is no “systemic risk spread across the board” and no structural problem in the stock market or the fund market.
Çömez’s post brought the debate back to the agenda through the losses suffered by investors and the responsibility of regulatory institutions.
