Record collection in traffic fines: Target exceeded by more than double
Rising traffic fines continue to draw public criticism. Economist İnan Mutlu announced that the 21 billion TL fine target set for last year was exceeded by more than double, with 43.5 billion TL collected.
The Ministry of Interior announced that AI-supported radars have been installed every 30 kilometers ahead of the Eid al-Adha holiday, one of the periods with the heaviest traffic across the country.
Although Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya's "radar every 30 kilometers" statement was made for security purposes, it is being criticized by some drivers as a "fine trap."
The increasing traffic fines and radar applications have also drawn reactions from figures close to the government. Most recently, Chief Advisor to the President Osman Saral stated that they have received numerous complaints regarding the fines. The issue was also brought up at the AKP Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting.
FINES ISSUED REACHED DOUBLE THE TARGET
Economist İnan Mutlu emphasized that traffic fines are steadily increasing with a chart he shared. He explained that although the fine target set for last year was 21 billion TL, the collection reached more than double that amount, specifically 43.5 billion TL.
In a post on his social media account, İnan Mutlu noted the following:
"When it comes to fines, targets are exceeded...
Last year, the revenue target from traffic fines was 21 billion liras.
The state collected 43.5 billion liras, more than double the target.
They must have thought 'we've struck gold,' as they increased the target by 168 percent this year to 55 billion liras.
As of the end of April, the fines issued reached 53.5 billion liras. 21 billion liras were collected in the first 4 months."
