Following the footage captured over the Aegean region, which became a long-standing topic of discussion on social media, meteorological sources explained that the phenomenon is a weather event known as a Red Sprite.

A red sprite is a reddish-orange, bright, plasma-like glow that occurs above storm clouds at an altitude of approximately 95 kilometers.

Red sprites are formed as a result of electrical discharges occurring within storm clouds. These discharges happen when positively and negatively charged particles within the clouds come together. This discharge creates red sprites as a result of an electric current passing through neutral nitrogen molecules.

Factors affecting the formation of red sprites include the size of the storm clouds, the amount of electrical charge within the clouds, and the temperature of the atmosphere.
