Release order for Aslı Aydemir

A release order has been issued for peace academic Aslı Aydemir, who was arrested on July 4 due to her reaction against the attack on LeMan magazine on June 30. The Istanbul 8th Criminal Court of First Instance ruled to end Aydemir's 195-day detention.

COURT ISSUES RELEASE ORDER

The decision regarding Aydemir, who was held on charges of "resisting a police officer" and "intentional injury," was influenced by the fact that she has a fixed residence, there is no suspicion of flight, and the evidence in the file has been collected. For these reasons, the court concluded that the detention had exceeded the limits of proportionality.

REASONING FOR INTERIM DECISION ANNOUNCED

In the court's interim decision dated January 14, 2026, the nature and character of the crime attributed to Aydemir, the current state of evidence in the file, and penal execution legislation were evaluated together. The decision also noted that the defendant is not detained or convicted for any other crime.

As a result of these evaluations, the court ruled that there was no need for continued detention and ordered Aydemir's immediate release. It was requested that the release order be fulfilled by sending a letter to the relevant penal institution.

RELEASE NEWS ANNOUNCED ON SOCIAL MEDIA

The news of Aydemir's release was shared with the public by the Academics for Peace via social media.

In their statement, the academics said, "A release order has been issued for our dear colleague Aslı Aydemir, who was arrested on July 4, 2024, for not taking a step back in the face of the mob that attacked LeMan magazine, and who has been unlawfully imprisoned for over six months."

INDICTMENT HAD NOT BEEN PREPARED FOR A LONG TIME

Aslı Aydemir was arrested on charges of "resisting a police officer" and "intentional injury," and the fact that the indictment, which should have been prepared, was not written for months had caused criticism in public opinion and legal circles.
