Remarkable statement from Ahmet Ercan following the earthquake in Sındırgı: 'Surprisingly tense...'

The earthquake swarm in Sındırgı, Balıkesir continues. The 5.1 magnitude tremor that occurred at 00:24 was felt in many cities across the Marmara and Aegean regions, primarily in Istanbul.

Following the 5.1 magnitude quake, 37 tremors of 1.5 magnitude or higher centered in Sındırgı were recorded.

While the ongoing earthquake swarm in Sındırgı has caused concern among citizens, earthquake experts have issued consecutive statements on the matter.

Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan stated in a post on his X account, "THE EARTHQUAKE SWARM CONTINUING IN SINDIRGI produced an M5.2 aftershock at 00:24. Aftershocks of the aftershock will continue. However, it is not expected to exceed M4.5. The Earth's crust in Sındırgı is surprisingly tense. The tension is shifting to the southeast. We hope that with tonight's M5.2 release, the tremors that have been ongoing since August 2025 following the M6.1 earthquake will now stop. We and the people of Sındırgı are tired of the tremors."

ÜŞÜMEZSOY: THESE ARE ROUTINE EARTHQUAKES

Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy noted the following:

"This is an earthquake on the second 6.1 fault that occurred in the summer. It means that when that fault breaks, there is a shift in the arrangement. Regions that have slipped less are slipping again, causing routine earthquakes.

When they break separately, earthquakes of magnitude 6 and above occur. But earthquakes of magnitude 5 have been occurring several times. As far as I can see, tonight's earthquake is also one of the routine ongoing tremors. I will receive information later regarding whether it is related to a new fault. When a fault breaks, these are the routine earthquakes occurring on the existing fracture on that fault.

In my model, I do not expect an earthquake larger than 6.5 in this region. This tremor is not a new fault rupture; it is a routine aftershock.

There might be an earthquake of around 5.5 in the Silivri region of Istanbul. It could affect Istanbul in this direction. There is also the Adalar fault. If it affects the Adalar fault, an earthquake of over 7 would occur, but that is a dead fault; there is no movement there."

PROF. DR. OKAN TÜYSÜZ: ACTIVITY MAY BE EXPECTED FOR ABOUT 1 MORE WEEK

Speaking after the Sındırgı-centered earthquake, Geological Engineer Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz stated, "It is normal for earthquakes of magnitude 4 to follow these earthquakes. It is difficult to say how long these aftershocks will last. There is a process that has been going on for almost six months since August. It is hard to specify how long it will last, but activity may be expected for about another week."
