Requested sentence for those who killed 'Palalı Sabri' announced

The investigation into the murder of Sabri Çelebi, known as "Palalı Sabri" for attacking protesters with a machete during the Gezi Park protests, has been completed. The prepared indictment requests a life sentence for 2 suspects.

The investigation into the death of Sabri Çelebi, who was shot 9 times in a fight in front of a nightclub in Beyoğlu on February 1, 2024, has been concluded. In the indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, Sabri Çelebi is listed as the 'victim', while Çetin Görer and Hüseyin Kırmızı are listed as 'suspects'.

2 PEOPLE APPROACHED HIM WHILE HE WAS IN THE VEHICLE

The indictment states that there was a pre-existing dispute between Sabri Çelebi and suspect Hüseyin Kırmızı due to past commercial relations. On the night of the incident, Çelebi arrived in front of an entertainment venue with his car and 2 people inside. While he was stopped there, conversations of an undetermined nature took place with a large group of people that appeared shortly after. The 2 people with Çelebi got out of the vehicle and went to the crowd, at which point the suspects from the opposing group, Hüseyin Kırmızı and Çetin Görer, approached Çelebi, who was still inside the vehicle.

ONE FIRED, THE OTHER PUNCHED

The indictment notes that after the 2 suspects approached Çelebi's vehicle, suspect Görer began firing at Çelebi multiple times with a gun, while the other suspect, Kırmızı, punched Çelebi in the face repeatedly. It was recorded that after being shot and wounded, Çelebi was taken to the hospital by his friends but could not be saved.

THEY CLAIMED THEY ACTED IN SELF-DEFENSE

The indictment, which also includes the suspects' statements, records that they claimed Çelebi approached them in his vehicle, opened the window, and made verbal provocations, and that he continued these provocations despite their warnings. They stated that when they went to him, they thought he was going to reach for his waistband to pull out a gun, so they threw punches and fired the gun in self-defense.

IT WAS STATED THAT 9 BULLETS HIT HIM

The indictment further states that according to the Forensic Medicine Institute Autopsy Report, 9 bullets hit Çelebi's body, and that suspect Kırmızı participated in the act of the other suspect, Görer, by slapping and punching Çelebi in a way that broke his resistance, and that they intentionally killed Sabri Çelebi.

LIFE SENTENCE REQUESTED FOR 2 SUSPECTS

In the prepared indictment, it was requested that suspect Çetin Görer be sentenced to a total of life imprisonment plus 1 year and 6 months to 6 years in prison for the crimes of 'intentional killing', 'firing a gun in a manner that causes fear, anxiety, or panic', and 'possession of an unlicensed firearm'. It was requested that the other suspect, Hüseyin Kırmızı, be sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime of 'intentional killing'. The trial of the suspects will begin in the coming days at the Istanbul High Criminal Court.
