Retired Major General Ahmet Yavuz evaluates: An analysis of what is happening on the Turkey and Israel-Palestine front
Following the surprise operation launched by Hamas against Israel on Saturday, Israel, which went on full alert, decided on a total blockade of Gaza. As tensions in the region continue to rise, retired Major General Ahmet Yavuz evaluated the Israel-Palestine attacks and Turkey's foreign policy.
The armed wing of Hamas, affiliated with Palestine, fired hundreds of rockets at Israel on Saturday morning, ending the ceasefire reached with Israel following the clashes in May. While the Israeli army declared a "state of war," the death toll in the clashes that began with Hamas's surprise and coordinated attacks has exceeded 1,300.
Retired Major General Ahmet Yavuz evaluated the developments in the region and Turkey's current foreign policy for 12 Punto.
''ISRAEL'S SELF-CONFIDENCE WILL BE WEAKENED AT MOST''
Touching upon the starting point of the attack organized by Hamas, Yavuz first stated the following:
''We say that Israel is being subjected to pressure here. The fact that the day the attack took place coincided with a holiday in Israel and the intelligence failure caught Israel unprepared. However, this part was in the first phase.''
Referring to the main actors in the ongoing attacks between Israel and Hamas, Yavuz said, ''There is an abnormal, uneven distribution of power. I don't think Hamas can follow through with this; perhaps it provides them with morale. At most, Israel's self-confidence will be weakened, and it will be the people of Gaza who suffer. Here, Hamas has carried out a strategic event. It disrupted the game at a time when Israel was making peace with Arab countries and Iran was making peace with Saudi Arabia.''
''THERE IS NO NEED TO GO INTO CONSPIRACY THEORIES''
According to Yavuz, conspiracy theories interpreted on social media regarding the attack, which are linked to Netanyahu, do not align with reality. Yavuz offers the following prediction regarding the course of the war:
''There is no need to go into conspiracy theories as if Netanyahu planned this event, but the result will benefit him. Netanyahu telling civilians to leave is also not something that can be accepted. Moreover, Hamas, having entered into such an event, has also made preparations against Israel's ground operation. The Israeli army will not be able to move freely in Gaza. They will face a very difficult situation. This war will not end immediately; it will have many more phases.''
''I WISH OUR ARMY SUCCESS''
Pointing to the correctness of the policy Turkey has followed regarding the events on the Israel-Palestine front, the retired Major General also stated that he supports the operations carried out against the PKK/YPG in Syria:
- ''After the Ukraine crisis, Turkey revised its foreign policy to a correct point. Although it has not achieved the results it wanted in Syria, the moderate policy it follows is extremely correct and appropriate. As for Syria, I wish our army success; hitting the targets is quite correct, but the policy in Syria (the policy of not standing side-by-side with Assad) ultimately serves the policy of the USA. It is this policy that keeps the YPG and PYD alive. The government needs to take the steps it pretends to be taking.''
- ''As long as the government's current policy continues, there will be no breakthrough for Turkey. There are only those from political Islamist groups like HÜDA-PAR, which have come to the agenda, who want the Turkish army to go to Gaza. The government can facilitate their being sent to Egypt or somewhere; if they want to, let them go and fight.''
