RTÜK launches investigation into 'Başkent Kulisleri' program on Sözcü TV
Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) Chairman Ebubekir Şahin announced that an investigation has been launched into the program "Başkent Kulisleri" (Capital Backstage) aired on Sözcü TV, following remarks made by CHP İzmir MP Tuncay Özkan regarding prisons.
RTÜK Chairman Şahin made a statement on his social media account regarding a dialogue in the program in question.
Stating that some old conspiracy claims dating back to the "Cold War" era were brought up in the program, Şahin underlined that the improvements in security and health in prisons following the coup attempt on July 15, 2016, are evident.
Emphasizing that Özkan targeted prisons and that the claim that political assassinations could occur through served meals or provided health services is completely untrue, Şahin stated, "We believe that Tuncay Özkan, who is a former journalist in addition to his political identity, knows very well that these statements, which harm social peace, do not constitute freedom of expression."
Noting that such statements target the public's sense of trust in the justice system, Şahin explained that they could also cause panic and fear among the relatives of people in prison, and are therefore unacceptable.
Şahin announced that an investigation has been initiated by RTÜK regarding the program in question.
