Rümeysa Öztürk released

It has been decided that doctoral student Rümeysa Öztürk, who was held in custody in the U.S. for supporting Palestine, will be released by court order.

A federal judge ordered the release of Tufts University student Rümeysa Öztürk, who had been held in an immigration detention facility for more than six weeks after writing an op-ed criticizing her school's response to Israel's war in Gaza, to the Trump administration.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Rümeysa Öztürk was detained by six masked ICE agents on the evening of March 25 while going to iftar with her friends in Massachusetts.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio had announced that Öztürk's student visa had been revoked and that she would be deported.

Rubio reported that the visas of more than 300 foreign students, whom he labeled as "Hamas supporters" and alleged were involved in anti-Israel activities, had been revoked.

U.S. federal judge Denise Casper had issued a temporary restraining order against Öztürk's deportation.

Tufts University, where Öztürk is a student, had also demanded the release of its student.
