Ruşen Gültekin reacts to the penal execution system: 'Judges hand down heavy sentences, but criminals go free'
Legal expert Ruşen Gültekin criticized the current penal execution system in a statement following the verdict in the Ahmet Mattia Minguzzi murder case. Gültekin stated, "Judges hand down the maximum sentences, but because of the execution system, criminals end up back on the streets."
The court has announced its verdict in the case regarding the murder of Ahmet Mattia Minguzzi. In the trial involving four defendants, two were sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment and 24 years in prison. The other two defendants were acquitted.
“THE EXECUTION SYSTEM WEAKENS JUSTICE”
Evaluating the decision, legal expert Ruşen Gültekin stated that Turkey's penal execution system weakens the sense of justice. Gültekin said, "Judges hand down the highest possible sentences, but because of the execution system, criminals go free. If they don't commit crimes while inside, they will be out in 8 years."
“LAWS HAVE BEEN RIDDLED WITH HOLES”
Noting that politicians have continuously disrupted the penal execution system with changes over the years, Gültekin stated, "Politicians have riddled the system with holes by changing the law repeatedly. The execution law has now become impossible to execute."
“POLITICIANS HAVE TURNED PRISONS INTO VOTE BANKS”
Claiming that prisons have become "vote banks," Gültekin shared numerical data regarding the current situation:
“There are currently 430 thousand inmates. Multiply that by five, and that means a massive vote bank. Furthermore, 2 million people are under judicial control. Politicians are harvesting votes by pardoning criminals.”

“PRISONS HAVE TURNED INTO CRIME ACADEMIES”
Stating that prisons have ceased to be rehabilitation centers, Gültekin added:
“Criminals enter prison knowingly; they get themselves locked up to learn the ways of crime. Prisons have now turned into institutions that do not rehabilitate criminals, but rather steer them back toward crime.”
