Sea snot alarm in Sarıyer: 'The danger is growing!'

Speaking about mucilage, also known as sea snot, Istanbul Environmental Council Secretary General Zafer Murat Çetintaş pointed out that the danger is increasing.

"INTENSE POLLUTION IS ACCUMULATING ON THE SHORES"

Istanbul Environmental Council Secretary General Zafer Murat Çetintaş stated, "One of the 54 types of pollutants that contaminate the seas is the combination of jellyfish, trash, and dead algae. It is one of the reasons for the formation of sea snot. Intense pollution is accumulating on these shores. As seen here, the jellyfish have begun to turn white and die. The jellyfish will liquefy and sink to the bottom. There is almost no fish here. Due to pollution in the Sea of Marmara and the Bosphorus, the variety of fish has decreased significantly. Today, the number of species is dropping even further. Although this season is a migration season, there is not enough oxygen at the bottom of the sea. Fish are dying in masses because they are left without oxygen."

"The danger will reach a larger scale and increase"

Zafer Murat Çetintaş said, "It is truly very sad that this pollution exists in a famous location like Sarıyer, the apple of Istanbul's eye. It is a heartbreaking situation. We must place ozone generators on such shores. Whether there are hundreds or thousands of them, what matters is to save the Sea of Marmara before the cost increases. There is a danger so great that it will be impossible to swim in the sea this summer. You are currently seeing the steps of the danger here. This danger will reach a larger scale and increase. If the wind does not blow and the weather does not harden, mucilage will increase very intensely. Because mucilage, which they call sea snot, is being encountered in the bottom waters and the waters of the Bosphorus."
