Second 'Can Atalay' meeting in Parliament: CHP's Murat Emir sets the date

The CHP has decided to call the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) to an extraordinary meeting again to discuss the situation of Can Atalay, who was elected as a TİP Hatay MP but whose parliamentary status was revoked despite the Constitutional Court's (AYM) release order.

CHP Group Deputy Chairman Murat Emir stated at a press conference that they would call Parliament to an extraordinary meeting on September 10 with this agenda. Emir announced that they would base the call on the request to have the AYM ruling, which declared the revocation of Atalay's parliamentary status "null and void," read out in the TBMM General Assembly.

WHAT HAPPENED

The TBMM had convened for Atalay the previous week. During the meeting, TİP Istanbul MP Ahmet Şık was attacked by AKP MPs while at the podium.

The session was initially suspended due to the following remarks by Şık: "I will not prolong my words. I will start with an observation. You have no shame. You have no shame, you have no dignity. Therefore, there is no need to talk about procedure here. The truth always hurts."

After speaking again following the session, Şık was attacked by AKP MPs led by Alpay Özalan.

DEM Party MP Gülistan Kılıç Koçyiğit, who tried to stop the attackers, also suffered a cut to her eyebrow.
