Seismologist Doğan Kalafat has passed away (Who is Doğan Kalafat?)

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğan Kalafat, the former director of the Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KRDAE) Regional Earthquake-Tsunami Monitoring and Evaluation Center, has passed away at the age of 65.

AFAD announced the sad news. In its statement, AFAD said, "Our esteemed teacher, Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğan Kalafat has passed away. We wish patience and condolences to his family, loved ones, and the earth sciences community." 

WHEN IS DOĞAN KALAFAT'S FUNERAL?

Kalafat's funeral will be held tomorrow (Friday, July 12) at the Zincirlikuyu Cemetery in Istanbul. A ceremony will be held for Kalafat at 10:30 AM at the Fatin Gökmen Conference Hall located on the Kandilli Campus.

CONDOLENCE MESSAGE FROM KANDİLLİ OBSERVATORY

The Kandilli Observatory also published a condolence message for Kalafat.

“We are in deep pain and sorrow over the loss of our friend Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğan Kalafat, one of the irreplaceable figures of the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute.

Our teacher Doğan, who made great efforts and contributions to the earth sciences regarding the maintenance and development of our country's earthquake monitoring network and who served as the Director of the Regional Earthquake-Tsunami Monitoring and Evaluation Center for many years, will always continue to live in our memories with his self-sacrifice, diligence, and smiling face.”

WHO IS DOĞAN KALAFAT?

Starting his career as a Geophysicist at the Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KRDAE) Seismology Laboratory in 1984, Kalafat served as the laboratory chief in the same department until 2004. Subsequently, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğan Kalafat became the Director of the National Earthquake Monitoring Center, a position he held until 2015. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kalafat continued his role as the director of the KRDAE Regional Earthquake-Tsunami Monitoring Center (BDTİM), which he began in 2015, until June 2024.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Doğan Kalafat, who has made great contributions to observational and instrumental seismology, earthquake monitoring, and the development of earthquake station networks in Turkey to date, pioneered the installation of the first broadband seismic stations with satellite systems and the investigation of faults in Turkey. He implemented notable projects in his areas of expertise, including activities on faults and earthquake formation patterns, investigation of the Earth's crust structure, earthquake catalog studies, fault plane studies, and field observations.
