Şener Üşümezsoy warns that region, saying 'It is not a simple earthquake!'

Earthquakes occurring one after another in different regions of Turkey have caused concern in Tunceli, Adana, and Antalya. Evaluating the 4.9-magnitude earthquake recorded in the Serik district of Antalya, Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy shared a comprehensive analysis.

“IT IS NOT A SIMPLE EARTHQUAKE”

Üşümezsoy stated that when looking at the analysis of the tremor, it is clear that it was not an ordinary rupture occurring on the surface. According to the expert, the earthquake is linked to deeper geological structures located beneath the Gulf of Antalya. Üşümezsoy said that such activity is expected in the region where two large crusts make contact.

WHICH FAULT DID THE EARTHQUAKE OCCUR ON?

Üşümezsoy reported that the earthquake occurred on a structure extending in a northwest–southeast direction and reaching a depth of approximately 100 kilometers. He used the expression, “This earthquake occurred in the subduction zone where the Mediterranean crust dives under the Anatolian crust.”

“THE RESULT OF A COMPLEX RECKONING”

Examining the tectonic map of the region, Üşümezsoy stated that the activity in Antalya is part of a broader tectonic process across the Mediterranean. Reminding that the line extending from the south of Cyprus to the west broke last month, the expert said that this structure forms a zone connected to Crete and Rhodes.

Prof. Dr. Üşümezsoy said, "The seismicity in and around the Gulf of Antalya emerges as a result of this complex and deep 'reckoning' between the Mediterranean and Anatolian plates."
