Sentence announced for Irına Franzen, who killed her boyfriend

The verdict has been announced in the trial of Irına Franzen (30), a Kazakhstani national, who was charged with stabbing her boyfriend Turan Döner (39) to death in Bursa.

Following the prosecutor's investigation, a lawsuit was filed against Franzen at the Bursa 6th High Criminal Court with a request for a life sentence on the charge of 'intentional homicide.' The prepared indictment noted that the detained defendant committed the murder out of fear of being killed.

'I WAS VERY SCARED AT THAT MOMENT'

Testifying during the investigation, Franzen said, "Turan and I were lovers. I had gone to Kazakhstan to visit my family for a vacation. After a while, I returned to Turkey. One night, I became suspicious of Turan and went through his phone. I saw that he was cheating on me with my closest girlfriend. At that moment, when Turan saw me going through his cell phone, he went crazy. He started hitting my head. I was very scared at that moment. To defend myself, I took a knife from the kitchen and swung it. I had no intention to kill."

Appearing before the judge at the final hearing, the detained defendant Irına Franzen repeated her previous statement as her final word and said the following:

"I am very regretful. My intention was not to kill Turan. Turan would constantly come home drunk and subject me to violence. He was very jealous of me and was cheating on me. Despite everything, I loved him very much. Despite everything, I wanted to build a family with him. That evening, when I looked at his cell phone messages, I realized he was cheating on me with my closest girlfriend. We argued.

I stabbed him to scare him. My goal was not to kill. I am regretful. After Turan passed away on the day of the incident, I went out to the street, screamed, and asked for help. I did not want to kill him."

15 YEARS IN PRISON WITH UNJUST PROVOCATION REDUCTION

Turan Döner's sister, P.D., who testified in court, said, "Irına was very jealous of my brother, who was quiet and calm. My brother, who fulfilled every wish of Irına, became a victim of his own mercy."

The court panel sentenced Franzen to life imprisonment for the crime of "intentional homicide." Applying an unjust provocation reduction, the panel reduced the sentence to 18 years. Taking into account the defendant's good conduct during the trial, the court reduced her sentence to 15 years and decided that Irına should remain in custody.

On August 26, 2023, in the Yeşil neighborhood of the Yıldırım district on Çelebi Mehmet Boulevard, Kazakhstani national Irına Franzen had stabbed and wounded her boyfriend, restaurant owner Turan Döner, at home.
