The trial of the defendant, who was charged with 'damaging places of worship and cemeteries' and 'violating the immunity of a residence' for allegedly entering a restricted area of the Hagia Sophia Mosque and breaking a door, with a requested sentence of 1 year and 6 months to 5 years in prison, has concluded with a verdict.

The lawyer for the defendant, Atıf K., who was tried without arrest, was present at the hearing held recently at the Istanbul Criminal Court of First Instance.

SENTENCE HANDED DOWN

Announcing its verdict, the court sentenced the defendant Atıf K. to 1 year and 8 months in prison for the crime of 'damaging places of worship and cemeteries.' The court ruled for the acquittal of the defendant on the charge of 'violating the immunity of a residence' on the grounds that the elements of the crime were not met.
