Sentence handed down to high school student who insulted Atatürk

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's photograph was the subject of offensive actions by high school student A.E.S., who was sentenced to 1 year and 8 months in prison for the crime of "publicly insulting the memory of Atatürk." The high school student, A.E.S., was released following the verdict.

High school student A.E.S. was brought to the hearing at the Anatolian 3rd Juvenile Court from the prison where he had been held since September 20. Lawyers for both sides were present at the hearing. The public prosecutor requested that the defendant be punished. Announcing its verdict, the court sentenced high school student A.E.S. to 1 year and 8 months in prison for the crime of "publicly insulting the memory of Atatürk." The court decided to defer the announcement of the verdict regarding the sentence given to the defendant and ordered the defendant's release.

FROM THE INDICTMENT

In the indictment prepared by the Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a prison sentence of 1 year and 6 months to 4 years and 6 months was requested for A.E.S. under the "Law on Crimes Committed Against Atatürk." Because A.E.S. is 17 years old, the sentence was reduced by one-third in accordance with Article 31 of the Turkish Penal Code. A prison sentence of 1 to 3 years had been requested for the 17-year-old high school student A.E.S.
