Shopping bags get a price hike after 5 years! How much are they now?
The Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change has set the price of plastic bags at 50 kuruş, effective January 1, 2025. The paid bag policy, which was introduced in 2019 at 25 kuruş to prevent pollution, has seen a price increase with the new regulation.
In order to prevent plastic-related waste pollution, plastic bags were made subject to a fee as of January 1, 2019, by the Ministry. Since that date, they have been sold in markets and shopping centers at the amount of 25 kuruş determined by the Ministry.
To determine the price of plastic bags to be applied in the new year, a Plastic Bag Commission Meeting was held at the Ministry on November 21, with the participation of relevant public institutions and organizations, as well as representatives of associations and federations operating in the sector.
During the meeting, coordinated by the General Directorate of Environmental Management, the opinions of sector representatives were also taken.

At the meeting, it was emphasized that although a bag costs retailers over 2 Turkish liras, including a production and recovery participation share (GEKAP) of 1 lira and 19 kuruş, consumers were only being charged 25 kuruş. Furthermore, it was expressed that the 25 kuruş price was not an amount that would reduce plastic bag consumption, and it was highlighted that the use of plastic bags has increased. The requests received from sector representatives at the commission meeting were submitted to the Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Murat Kurum.
PLASTIC BAG FEE HAS BEEN DETERMINED
Following the evaluations, it was decided that the plastic bag fee would be applied as 50 kuruş in 2025.
The decision will be effective as of January 1, 2025.
