While certain debates continue within the CHP, which emerged as the leading party in the local elections, won numerous municipalities, and is seen as the top party in polls, the re-establishment of the Social Democratic Populist Party (SHP) has drawn attention.
The SHP, which ceased to exist on March 13, 2010, after deciding to merge with the then-Equality and Democracy Party (EDP), has taken its place on the political stage for the third time on June 28, 2024, after a 14-year break.
According to information on the official website of the Supreme Court of Appeals Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the party was re-established as of June 28, 2024.
KARAYALÇIN HAD SAID "I WOULD NOT FIND IT RIGHT"
When debates over change began within the party following the May 2023 elections, it was alleged that the SHP would be re-established; former SHP Chairman Murat Karayalçın had said, "If there are those who think about reopening the SHP as the last Chairman, I would not support it and I would not find it right."
It is stated that the vast majority of those opposed to the current management in the CHP prefer to remain within the party and continue their work.
On November 3, 1985, with the merger of the Populist Party and SODEP, the name of SODEP was changed to the "Social Democratic Populist Party." Following the merger, the united party, which took the name SHP by unanimous vote on the same day, had Aydın Güven Gürkan as its first founding chairman, who left this post to Erdal İnönü on June 1, 1986.
A decision to dissolve was taken on February 18, 1995, and participation in the CHP was achieved. On the same date, the CHP Extraordinary Congress accepted the participation of the SHP into the CHP.
SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PEOPLE'S PARTY RE-ESTABLISHED IN 2002
It was established on May 24, 2002, under the chairmanship of former Deputy Prime Minister Murat Karayalçın. The party, where Deniz Baykal opponents within the CHP gathered, acted as an umbrella party in the March 28, 2004 local elections by forming an alliance with DEHAP and some leftist parties, and the SHP received 5.1 percent of the vote. It was represented in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) with the resignation of 5 CHP deputies who joined the SHP. Chairman Murat Karayalçın resigned from the chairmanship of his party and became the CHP Ankara Metropolitan Municipality mayoral candidate in the 2009 local elections. Subsequently, Uğur Cilasun was elected as acting chairman. At the Extraordinary Congress on June 6, 2009, Hüseyin Ergün was elected chairman. At the SHP congress on March 13, 2010, a decision was made to merge with the Equality and Democracy Party (EDP).
After a 14-year hiatus, the SHP was re-established on June 28, 2024, and took its place on the political stage for the third time.
